Abstract:
In every work organization, formal and informal, conditions of service, most especially the health and safety is usually considered essential for employees or apprentices in many developed countries, but studies in many developing nations have demonstrated that workers and apprenticeship health care and security are irrelevant. In any country, the issues of health care and security is very important not only for workers and apprentices but entire populace. Thus, it is the responsibility of the government of every nation to make provision for them effectively. The level of development in developing countries, coupled with poor leadership that careless about the wellbeing of the populace, but theirs seems to have created any impression that health care and security of people are not important. Although, studies have shown poor provision of health care and security in developing countries, but it appears the situation is more horrible in apprenticeships involving vocations such as motor and bicycle repairs, bricklaying, painting, sewing/tailoring, hair dressing/barbing, and other commercial activities, but this study limit its scope to Indigenous Igbo business mentoring practice which entails mentoring the youth to acquire business skills and financial support needed to establish small-scale enterprise for a time frame. The study examines the condition under which apprenticeship serve and the implications it portends to human development. The study used data from secondary source and also engage with content analysis as a methodology. The study, in its concluding remarks commended the practice due to its contributions to job creation to reduce the high rate of unemployment in Nigeria. It also commends its contributions to the social and human development of “Nwa boy” (apprentice) that have enrolled in the practice. In spite of this, the study is of the view that if the conditions of service of “Nwa boy” apprenticeship could be improved, the purpose of indulging in the scheme could be properly established.
