Explicating Promotion Opportunity as Determinant of Job-Hopping Intentions and Teaching Engagement of Academic Staff of Selected Universities in Nigeria

Abstract:

This study examined promotion opportunity as determinant of job-hopping intention and how the intentions affect academics’ teaching engagement of selected universities in Southwest Nigeria. A total of 545 questionnaires were retrieved from the faculty of six selected universities in this study. The findings revealed that, the indirect influence of fair promotion criteria was significant on teaching engagement of academic staff, regular promotion criteria recorded a positive and significant impact on teaching engagement, staff that are due for promotion but yet to be considered significantly influenced teaching engagement, while academic staff that are not promoted due to inability to meet the promotion requirements have insignificant influence on teaching engagement  Overall, the relationship between perceived promotion opportunity and teaching engagement of academic staff in the selected institutions is confirmed to be directly significant.
