Extracurricular Activities and Academic Performance of Accounting Students in Private Universities in Nigeria

Abstract:

This study examines the effect of extracurricular activities on academic performance of accounting students. It is expected that students engage in extracurricular activities during their academic pursuits Though these activities may encroach into study time, these activities are necessary for the students to learn how to balance both their social and academic life. In carrying out this research, a questionnaire is administered to all the accounting students at Covenant University during the 2017/2018 academic session. The data gathered is analysed with the ordinary least square regression. The results show that there is no significant relationship between student leadership, sporting activities, social media and academic performance. Whereas, religious commitment is found to have a positive significant relationship with academic performance. It is therefore recommended that religious commitment be encouraged as a vital component of extracurricular activities which students should engage to boost their academic performance.
