Facilitating Resource Allocation Decision through Bibliomining: The Case of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia Library

Abstract:

Libraries have vastly developed from traditional toward digital services in these few years. The needs and demands of the users, institutions and international organizations as well as the current technology have placed significant impacts on libraries either in their budget cost or in their decision making mode. Libraries management nowadays definitely relies on bibliographic data and digital sources outcome for planning activities and future development and yet few have used them as advantages. Universiti Teknologi Malaysia Library is chosen as the case study as it has nearly 1 million records of collection with different formats. The huge library bibliographic data could be statistically patterned and clustered to indicate relationship among these records. Bibliomining terms which are similar to library data mining fields and as evidence based research practice are tools which are able to visualize how libraries manage their cost, staff activity, customer service, user needs, marketing, high volume books usage, circulation, reference transaction, quality of collection, educational programs etc. The purpose of this paper is to propose in conducting bibliomining to the library data warehousing as a tool to help influence library management in doing their decision making. These are very important to the libraries' managements in the future. In addition, we can use the same data mining skill in different libraries even enterprises to make resources usage effectively.
