Factors Influencing Knowledge Sharing Among Graduate Students in a Public University in Malaysia

Abstract:

Previous studies have been focusing on knowledge sharing in business organizations. Limited work has been done among the students, especially graduate students. Since these students are expected to become future leaders in any organizations, it is therefore desirable to know their knowledge sharing behavior, so that it may be improved prior to joining the workforce. In the present study, the study aims to investigate factors that may influence Master students’ knowledge sharing behavior. The study administered a questionnaire to 173 master’s students in a public university in Malaysia. This questionnaire consisted of three major items (individual, learning environment, and technology), of which was analyzed against the students’ knowledge sharing behavior. Results revealed that there was a significant relationship between knowledge sharing and other factors under study. i.e. individual factors (willingness to share, ability to share, and attitude towards knowledge sharing); environment factor (learning environment); and technology factors (technology availability, and technology support). Individual, environmental and technology act as factors that influence the nature of postgraduate student’s knowledge sharing behavior. To promote knowledge sharing, educators and university administrators should take these points into consideration.
