Farmers Knowledge of Agricultural Radio Programmes in Indigenous Languages: Implications for Agribusiness in Nigeria

Abstract:

This study sets out to investigate farmers knowledge of agricultural radio programmes in indigenous languages with focus on three States – Benue, Nasarawa and Plateau States and its implications for agribusiness in Nigeria. The study draws information from diversity of sources, including 663 farmers in the selected States of Nigeria. The study adopted survey research design and was anchored on the diffusion of innovations theory. Findings reveal that farmers are aware that agricultural radio programmes in indigenous languages. Furthermore, most of the respondents agreed that agricultural radio programmes in indigenous languages is very informative Similarly, most of the respondents agree that the content of agricultural radio programmes in indigenous languages are relevant for agribusiness. The study concludes that farmers have good knowledge of agricultural radio programmes in indigenous languages which posits a good future for agribusiness. This knowledge helps them better understand what they need to do per time in order to improve their yield and sell their products at good prices. Among other things, it is recommended that agricultural radio programmes in indigenous languages should continue to be aired and improved upon so as to encourage farmers to improve their yield and boost agribusiness.
