Flipped Classroom Model as the Solution for Big Class

Abstract:

The research was conducted as an answer to one of the lecturers’ problems in the teaching and learning process: a big class with more the 100 students. The solution proposed was the Flipped Classroom model.  This research was mix-method research with a population of 150 Medical Faculty students taking Academic Writing class. 49 students were taken as samples. The data was gathered through several steps: the implementation of Flipped Classroom Model, data gathering, data analysis, and conclusion drawing. It was found that the Flipped Classroom is effective and efficient as a teaching and learning model for a big class. it enables the students to learn anywhere, not limited to the classroom study only. It also saves more time; therefore, there were more discussions occurred in the classroom. However, online materials cannot replace face-to-face teaching and learning, and it is considered as learning assistance and retrieval material.
