Abstract:

The country's food security is an important indicator of socio-economic development, a component of social and physical health of the population. Ukraine having got high quality black soil is a potential contender for growing ecologically clean food. Land market can start working in the country in the near future, which potential business is interested in. Food security is an integral part of many economic and political transformations in Ukraine. This issue requires comprehensive research, including scientists.

The paper analyzes the current state of food security in Ukraine, indicators of physical and economic availability of food by main foodstuffs have been calculated. It was found that the highest level of food security by the indicator of physical accessibility is characterised for certain products, in particular, it is oil, potatoes and sugar, and by the indicator of economic accessibility - for potatoes and bread products. Volumes of food production by domestic producers fully meet the solvent demand of the population, however, due to the low incomes of the majority of Ukrainian citizens, the consumption of practically all foodstuffs (except potatoes and bread products) is lower than rational norms. In order to solve the problems of food security of Ukraine, it is necessary first of all to raise the level of population's income, which will stimulate increase in consumption of foodstuffs and rise the capacity of the internal food market.
