Abstract:

This study developed a framework for business information systems (BIS) for protecting themselves from internet-based threats such as hacking and theft of identity credentials and databases belonging to SMMEs and their customers. Data was gathered from operators of SMMEs by using a structured questionnaire and in-depth interviews. A combination of quantitative and qualitative methods of data collection and analysis were used for conducting the study. As part of the quantitative aspect of study, data analysis was performed by using methods such as cross-tab analysis, binary logistic regression analysis and factor analysis. Based on findings obtained from the study, it is recommended that SMMEs should update their internet security systems on a regular basis. It is also recommended that operators of SMMEs should be provided with training programmes on how to use appropriate business information systems for protecting themselves and their customers from internet based threats such as hacking and theft of valuable datasets belonging to SMMEs and their customers.
