Abstract:
Food wastage represents a current issue for the international and national authorities, which has become ever more important in the context of an increasing food insecurity and concern regarding the protection against global climate changes. Important quantities of food representing over a quarter of the entire global production come out of the supply chain because of different reasons or are eliminated from the economic circuit as a consequence of man’s action or lack of action, generating important economic loss and environment pollution, thus putting additional pressure on farmers. The article proposes an evaluation of the food wastage phenomenon at a global and national level, with the identification of its causes and the necessary measures that must be taken in order to reduce it. Romania makes efforts in reducing food wastage, especially by implementing Community programs regarding the sustainable development of the agro-food system. The case study regarding the reasons for food wastage in Romania is useful in order to reduce food wastage at a national level.
