Handheld Technology in Learning Probability: How Did They Perceive?

Abstract:

Most students face difficulties in learning mathematics. Numerous efforts including adopting innovative approaches and tools are constantly employed to help address the difficulties in mathematics learning. Handheld technology is one of the most portable and affordable technology in Mathematics education, as it serves as an effective learning tool, speeds-up the computation process of solving mathematical problems and enhances performance. This study aims to examine students’ perception on the adoption of handheld technology, i.e. graphing calculator (GC) in learning Probability at a private higher learning institution in Malaysia, which has yet to be studied extensively, especially in Malaysia. Findings favor the use GC in learning Probability, particularly in terms of calculator usage, quality of output from GC, understanding of Probability concepts, confidence in problem solving, enhanced communication abilities and the attitude towards GC. Recommendations made are aimed at assisting educators, policy-makers and researchers in enhancing the quality of the teaching and learning of Probability.
