Handheld Technology: Multi-Facets of Graphing Calculators

Abstract:

The inception of technology in classrooms is not something that is new, rather appears to be a norm and practice in most classrooms. Various forms of technology have been adopted in seemingly difficult subjects, such as mathematics. One such tool is the graphing calculator, a hand held tool, which is portable and relatively affordable. It appears to be increasing in usage and in the number of educators incorporating this tool in classrooms. Its varied multi-functions have been found to be motivating, as it can process the mechanical steps of procedure in solving mathematical problems. Users can solve tedium calculations faster, ‘see’ abstract concepts, draw graphs as well as stimulate their cognitive process. The multi-function, multi-faceted handheld tool can be viewed as a “crunching machine”, “visualizer”, “graphics artist” and a “thinking tool”. This paper discusses how the graphing calculator is seen as a “crunching machine”, “visualizer”, “graphics artist” and a “thinking tool” in enhancing understanding, increasing cognitive levels and consequently improved performance.
