Happier Villages and Happier Cities: Towards a Better Understanding of Subjective Determinants of Happiness. An Example of Poland

Abstract:

Different populations may feel happiness and thus satisfaction with life differently. In the last decade, the interest of researchers regarding both the quality of life and the feeling of happiness as well as their subjective assessment has increased significantly. In many cases, the factors that influence happiness can vary greatly depending on the context. The aim of our research is to determine the factors influencing the feeling of happiness by rural and urban residents in Poland. The study used information from the individual questionnaire "Social diagnosis - the conditions and quality of life of Poles" in 2015. When comparing the subjective quality of life, features relating to the so-called partial satisfaction with satisfaction with specific areas of life. Determination of factors influencing the feeling of happiness and satisfaction with life of rural and urban residents in Poland was made with the use of logistic modeling. The conducted study showed that the feeling of happiness among the inhabitants of rural areas and cities in Poland, through the prism of satisfaction with various areas of life, varies. The results of our research show that the probability of feeling happiness among rural residents increases with the degree of satisfaction with such areas of life as relationships with loved ones, housing conditions and safety in the place of residence. On the other hand, the likelihood of city dwellers feeling happy increases with increasing satisfaction with the financial situation, health care and leisure activities.
