Abstract:

At present, there is a major concern for health policy at European Union level. Many specialized studies highlight the importance of healthy populations to support economic and social development. Especially in the context of the financial crisis that affected the amounts allocated to healthcare systems and demographic forecasts, showing a trend of an aging European population, there is the issue of sustainability of public healthcare systems and the role of private healthcare systems. Our paper presents healthcare systems, their funding and their typology in the European Union. The paper also captures the  development of specific indicators that allow analyzing the European healthcare system and its effectiveness.
