How Private’ Is ‘Private’? The Malaysian Experience

Abstract:

Do we have a right to privacy and quiet enjoyment of our personal life? Is this as inherent as respiration or does it have to be structured and regulated like so many spheres of our normal daily life. In today’s increasingly connected world our lives, personal details, preferences and eccentricities have become accessible in the public domain.  People care about their personal privacy and have a right to expect that their personal details remain confidential. Yet almost every organization we deal with in our daily lives holds some personal information about us. This paper examines the degree of protection given to personal data under Malaysia’s recently passed Personal Data Protection Act 2010.
