How Safe is the Patient’s Data on Electronic Medical Record Systems

Abstract:

Electronic Medical Record system has proven to be greatly beneficial and advantageous to both the medical industry and to patients, seeking medical care. However, the mechanisms of safety related to EMR system and the end users access to patient’s medical information sheds questions in relation to privacy and confidentiality. The objective of this study is to analyze how patients’ perceive Electronic Medical Record systems, operability with regard to safety and security of their medical records. The study has revealed that majority of the patients were apprehensive about the government and computer hackers, gaining access to their medical records. Apart from this, the patients were not too skeptical or cynical regarding the insurance companies, getting access to their medical information. This study may contribute to the enhancement of EMR systems and may subsequently lead to the protection and safety of the patient’s privacy.
