How to Measure Sustainable Cities? The Concept, Methodology and the Results of Polish Sustainable Cities Ranking

Abstract:

Implementation of the primary objective of the concept of sustainable development - sustainable  improvement of the quality of life of the community - acquires particular significance in the context of  urban areas, which can be considered as "unsustainable" areas with the clear dominance of  anthropogenic and human capital, and degraded natural environment. Sustainable urban development is  one of the seventeen goals of Agenda for Sustainable Development 2030, which forms the development plan for the world agreed by 193 UN Member States and expected to be implemented by 2030.  This article attempts to define the concept of a sustainable city and explains relationships between  sustainable development and quality of life. The main objective of this paper is to present the concept,  methodology and results of the Polish Sustainable Cities Ranking.
