Identifying Opportunities to Sustain Environmental Compatibility for Construction Projects

Abstract:

In recent years, the construction sector, as one of the most dynamic and flexible economy sectors, has faced many confrontations in terms of: rapid urbanization, environmental pollution, waste generation and resource scarcity. Environmental impacts are created throughout the entire life-cycle of buildings, from the extraction of raw materials, through the construction, use and maintenance phases, to demolition and eventual waste disposal and/ or material recovery and reuse. Sustainable development means essentially the continued economic growth based on ever-increasing production output and consumption; nevertheless, modern buildings need to meet severe performance requirements and admissibility criteria. The paper intend to provide an overview and to highlight main aspects in identifying and prioritizing opportunities for adaptation in the present global context that put construction business in front of some very complex situations characterized by many interdependencies.
