Impact Factors of Work-Life Conflict: Quality of Life amongst Academian’s Sandwich Generation

Abstract:

Quality of Life is an important element in reassured the happiness level among sandwich generation (SG).  SG comprises of people who simultaneously care for their children and the elderly parents. In Asians country, many people believe that children need to take care for their aging parents. They feel responsible to care their elderly and at the same time flourish their own children. SG is an increasing phenomenon in Malaysia. The stress in work and supports from surrounding had influence SG’s mental illness, physical health and also their social relationship status. The economic’s burden had forced them to work in order to survive. It was aggravated with the culture that needs the person to be physically at office while the task can be completed virtually. Therefore, the main purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between Work-Life Conflict (WLC), Social Support (SS) and Quality of Life (QoL) among academicians who is belongs under group SG.  This study was conducted in university situated in Klang Valley area. The Quota Sampling Technique was used because of unavailability of this generation’s list or statistics. Set of questionnaire was distributed to 100 respondents. It was found that most of the carer was age 30-39 years old. They spend 61-70 hours caring for their children whilst 26 hours spend for their parents. Most of them have been carer for more than 10 years old. The highest mean for the WCL was 3.1 which indicate that they are too tired to do things after they come home. Besides that, the highest mean shows for SS is 3.39 which indicate the support from family members is needed to provide care for children and parent. The QoL shows the highest mean 3.26 is for the statement I want to give everything to my children which they wish. The relationship between WCL and QoL was found strong (r = 0.731). However among academician, the SS was found to be no relationship with QoL with r=0.457. Therefore, the recommendation can be made from the result was the attention should be given to reduce work life conflict. This will increase the quality of life among sandwich generation and simultaneously increase their work production.
