Implementation of ICT among Small and Medium Entrepreneurs: A Malaysian Survey

Abstract:

This paper surveys the implementation of information and communication technology (ICT) amongst small and medium entrepreneurs (SMEs) in Malaysia. A study case is conducted among small and medium entrepreneur companies engaged in various types of businesses such as traditional foods, frozen foods, textiles, services, agro based products and others. The paper presents the results of a questionnaire survey conducted in December 2006 to April 2007 among companies registered under the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI). It is postulated that this paper will provide a broad overview of ICT usage among SMEs in Malaysia having regards of the Malaysian government policies to enhance productivity and expand their market through the adoption of ICT. The Government of Malaysia has been promoting the use of ICT as a tool for SMEs in conjunction with the establishment of the Multimedia Super Corridor and National ICT Agenda (NITA) since 1990. Nevertheless, to what extent this policy and agenda have been achieved remains unknown. This will need a thorough survey to gauge the present situation particularly for SMEs. In addition, this survey will also serve as a touchstone for all managers responsible in information systems and SMEs to evaluate their position in this era of globalisation.
