Improving the Financial Literacy of the Low-Income Population Layers: Evaluating the Efficiency of Information Methods

Abstract:

The relevance of the research topic is due to the need to find effective ways to reduce the number of low-income segments of the population by increasing their financial literacy. Improving financial literacy is associated with the task of finding the best channels and ways to inform the public. The conceptual research apparatus has been considered. The target audience has been determined. The analysis and systematization of the modern and foreign studies in the field of financial literacy has been executed. Having assessed the information sources in the field of financial literacy as negative, the authors came to the conclusion that it is necessary to increase the effectiveness of the channels for disseminating information to improve financial literacy among the low-income groups of the population by adapting them to the characteristics of specific user groups. The purpose of this article is to develop and apply a methodology for evaluating the effectiveness of various means of information transmission in the field of improving financial literacy of low-income groups of the population. The basis of the study is the method of a semantic differential, which made it possible in the best way to assess the perception of the methods of information transfer by certain categories of low-income groups of the population. The study was conducted in the Chelyabinsk Region of the Ural Federal District of the Russian Federation in 2019. The sample size was 500 people. The respondents were divided into groups according to socio-demographic characteristics. Using experimental conditions, the authors have proved that interactive visualization tools best meet the needs of low-income groups in obtaining information. The originality of the research lies in developing and testing the methodology for assessing the effectiveness of educational and financial literacy materials that correlate with the interests of users.
