Abstract:
Intelligence is not the only determinant of high academic performance of students. Academic performance of a student is always associated with the many components of learning environment. The aim of this study was to ascertain the effect of learning environment on students’ academic performance in the study area. The social learning theory was adopted for the study. The study population comprised of final year students in Covenant University and Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, Ogun state, Nigeria. The sample size for the study was 203 respondents while a researchers’ self-developed questionnaire formed the instrument for data collection. Descriptive analysis of data collected was done using the IBM Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS). Out of the 203 respondents, 51.2% (104) were males while 48.8% (99) were females. Most of them (70.9%) were between the ages of 18 and 22 years of age. Respondents from Covenant University were 52.2% (106) while that of Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta was 47.8% (97). Most respondents (49.3%) were between the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of 3.50-4.49. In addition, most of the respondents’ fathers (60.1%) and mothers (57.6%) had University education. On the impact of learning environment, most respondents reveal that their school environment was favourable to their academic performance. In terms of feeling of security, 36% responded to the affirmative while 28% revealed that they receive positive interpersonal relationships from their learning environment. Many of the respondents (37%) expressed satisfaction with the learning opportunities and facilities available in their institution. In conclusion, this study reveals that there is a positive relationship between learning environment and academic performance in the study area. It is there recommended that more Tertiary institutions in Nigeria invest more in boosting the students’ leaning environment for increasing academic performance among University undergraduates.
