Abstract:
This study investigated the influence of work-life balance and spousal support on marital stability of women in Lagos State. A sample of 139 working women from secondary schools, hospitals and banks in Lagos State were randomly selected for the study. The participants completed a measure of the work-life balance and spousal support scale. Two hypotheses were raised to achieve the objectives of the study and were tested at p=0.05. Multiple regression was used to test hypothesis one while independent sample t-test was used to test hypothesis two. The results revealed that there was no significant joint influence of work-life balance and spousal support on marital stability of teachers, health workers and bankers {F(2,108)=66.98, p>.01). Spousal support was found to separately influence marital stability (t=1.168, p<.05). There was no significant difference found in the marriage stability of the old and young women. The study concluded that work-life/family balance should be properly maintained since the two spheres are paramount and are sources of life fulfilment to individuals. Spousal support helps women manage their work and marital lives. It was recommended that work-life policies/initiatives should be regularly reviewed and promoted by stakeholders in both public and private organisations for the welfare of employees, especially women. Finally, the study further recommends that social support network should be encouraged among couples.
