Information System Planning in a Manufacturing Supply Network: Case Study of Godrej Consumer Products Limited (GCPL)

Abstract:

Godrej Consumer Products Limited (GCPL) is a case of strategic planning of information systems (IS) to achieve collaborative planning of inventory across the supply chain. GCPL has taken specific initiatives to integrate distributors, retailers and suppliers across its extensive supply network. The case shows that different supply chain partners in an actor-based business network may require separate information system planning and design. The case presents a differentiated analysis of design elements (e.g. relationships, processes, systems as well as change issues) from the perspective of a major player in the Indian Consumer Packaged Goods (CPG) Industry. The case highlights the need for coordination among various IT initiatives and between network partners and business managers of the key actor. The case discussion also focuses on qualitative and quantitative benefits achieved for all partners through strategic planning of information systems across the GCPL network and adds valuable information to the business relevance of IT investments.
