The Information Systems Flexibility and the Firm Performance

Abstract:

The flexibility of the information systems structure and functions is considered as one of the factors influencing the long time performance of a company. This study presents an overview of the literature analyzing this subject, the evolution of the concept and the influence it has on the competitiveness of the company. The paper finds that the literature approaching the flexibility concept evolved from qualitative analyses limited to the IT resources, to quasi-quantitative analyzes approaching the global level of information system, based on detailed representations of its architecture and functionality. Nevertheless, in spite of these progresses, the knowledge of the information systems flexibility concept is still limited. Further studies are necessary, regarding its significance, assessment and practical implementation, considering the increasing complexity of modern technology and increased instability of business environment.
