Abstract:
Sustainable supply chains are not only essential to delivering long-term profitability, but are also crucial environmental and social responsibility for organizations in today’s global marketplace. Due to growth in international trade, demand for services provided by logistics and supply chain systems has risen. Especially, the link between economic growth and transport growth is important. As economies grow, more transport is required to move the freight that economic growth inevitably generates. Concepts such as “carbon footprint” describe the environmental disbenefits associated with supply chain activities. The issue then becomes how logistics and supply chain systems can be made more sustainable given the continued demand which exists for their services. Thus, supply chain professionals are in an outstanding position to impact sustainability practices (Carter and Rogers, 2008).
