Innovation Behavior and Manager’s Performance Based on Local Wisdom: Sustainable Construction Approach

Abstract:

The demand for innovation on a sustainable construction practice increases along with the awareness of the decreasing environmental quality, limited resources (water, energy, land) and increasing population growth. The practice of sustainable construction in developing countries is part of the United Nations Environment program, Agenda 21 for Sustainable Construction in Developing Countries. This article aimed to discuss the development of innovation behavior and manager's performance for sustainable construction based on local wisdom. Innovation behavior based on local wisdom discusses about local wisdom in the perspective of a less extreme acculturation, namely the innovation process that relies on and strengthens local genius. Local wisdom is a product of the past culture that is worthy of being taken into account in life continuously, and its ability has been tested to survive until now. Performance and innovation behavior for sustainable construction based on local wisdom requires support: (1) manager's competencies, especially those related to knowledge and expertise about local wisdom, (2) willingness to behave innovative through the climate of organizational justice, (3) innovation resource through knowledge management. Behavior and performance of innovation require prior knowledge to be developed into new knowledge (new technology, new methods, practical experience, new markets)..
