Institutional Development and Climate Change Adaptation In Nigeria

Abstract:

Climate change is believed to be one of the greatest threats to humanity in the 20th century. It poses a lot of risk to government planning and development. There is no doubt that climate change will change the course of development in the 21st century. This has made many governments world over and international organizations make frantic commitments towards tackling this growing menace. Many countries have set out plans and policies to deal with this issue, both in terms of adaptation and mitigation strategies. The progress made so far cannot be said to be the same globally, mainly due to varying degree of response towards combating climate change by government and other institutions responsible. One key area to then consider is the role that institutions play in helping vulnerable communities adapt to changing climate. Institutions do matter in designing appropriate strategies for adaptation to climate change impact. They are believed to be central to developing a climate-resilient agenda, especially for developing countries.
