Integrated Virtual Reality Solution for Staff Training at Ford Company

Abstract:

This study aims to determine the means by which one of the latest ICT technologies, virtual reality (VR) respectively, provides support for business innovation and optimizes decision-making. For this purpose, we have conducted several studies in order to determine the way in which VR can be used in a company such as Ford Romania. We have therefore developed a mobile software application to train new employees on the safety standards using a range of technologies (C#, Unity 5.6 and Adobe Photoshop) and specific tools (VR glasses). Using the VR glasses, the app was installed on a mobile phone inserted in the headset, and used to simulate different real-life situations that may occur within the company, thus providing real support to all staff in charge of insuring employees with the adequate training as far as work-safety and employment protection at Ford are concerned. It has been found that the software application improves the training activities provided to Ford employees by reducing the amount of time spent on carrying out training activities for the company’s employees as well as increasing the responsiveness thereof, as the images obtained using VR, by means of a simple movement of the person’s head, are much more effective than theoretical training. The obvious conclusion which shines through is that, due to the use of VR in the training process, employees are much more receptive, as it is much easier for them to understand and remember something they see with their own eyes instead of a written text or indescribable graphics that require many hours of study.
