Intellectual Capital in Small and Medium-sized Enterprises – Role and Significance for Innovation-based Development

Abstract:

The aim of the article is to present the links between intellectual capital and the development of small and medium-sized enterprises based on innovation. The analysis presents the results of research conducted among representatives of Polish small and medium-sized enterprises located in the south-eastern region. Apart from the links between the factors shaping the intellectual capital and innovativeness of SMEs, the importance attached to this group of companies in equalizing the differences in the socio-economic development of regions was also indicated. The opinions of entrepreneurs and their perception of the role of intellectual capital, knowledge management and innovation may be of key importance in creating appropriate conditions by business environment institutions and local governments to support local entrepreneurship.
