Abstract:

Many services are offered and performed by mu­nicipalities; this includes Electrical / Energy Dis­tributions with increasing number of clients in each year. Hence there is bad need for a reliable, effi­cient and intelligent IT infrastructure for automat­ing the Energy Meter Reading and Management processes. This need becomes more feasible espe­cially in the continuous advancement of intelligent networked embedded microcontroller systems into Energy Metering systems. Intelligent and secure Automatic Meter Reading and Management can be of great importance for such municipalities and power companies so as to minimize the number of traditional visits required by the distribution company, hence decreasing the number of employees used in performing this traditional time consuming and high cost work. In this work we will start by surveying the current technologies and techniques used in handling remote meter reading and management. Different solutions will be proposed including existing ones and new ideas using Mobile Agents will be suggested to optimize different factors for satisfying the automatic read­ing tasks in a secure manner.
