Internet of Things – A New Challenge for Environmental Protection

Abstract:

Nowadays, any technological innovation should meet the environmental requirements imposed by the regulatory organisations or by the consumers in order to be accepted. Internet of Things should also meet this requirement. This paper aims to analyse, from the theoretical point of view, some of the technologies which are specific to the Internet of Things and the way in which it influences the environment. After a short introduction, the second part presents the concept of Internet of Things. The third part concentrates on the influence of Internet of Things on the environment, the stages of the life cycle in which it is present and the fields in which it is used.  The next part presents the negative and the positive effects on the environment of the most important technologies which actually make possible the existence of Internet of Things. Finally, there are exposed the conclusions of the study and the future research aims based on the main trends identified in the literature of the field.
