Interoperability in the Industrial Internet of Things: Challenges and Enabling-Technologies

Abstract:

The deployment of the Internet of Things (IoT) for industrial automation applications has huge potentials. Achieving the interconnection and interaction between the devices, systems services and users over the internet, required for its realization however, poses a substantial challenge. This paper focuses on identifying the main challenges associated with achieving interoperability as well as key interoperability enabling technologies and standards that have been developed and deployed for industrial applications. The paper helps to serve as a useful resource to organization attempting to gain an understanding of the available platforms for meeting interoperability challenges as well as helps identify the prevalent approaches being employed for achieving interoperability and the areas of need for further collaboration and studies.
