Introduction to the Folksonomy of tThe Community Part of Wikipedia

Abstract:

The Wikipedia categorization system was introduced to allow browsing and navigation between Wikipedia entries. Since entries are technically regular web pages in every wiki running on the MediaWiki engines, this is also the mechanism for navigating throughout a given wiki. Since the underlying philosophy of wikis is the ability to freely create page content, the Wikipedia category system is not a classical taxonomy, but a folksonomy. At the same time, each wikipedia is a unity of two parts - a collection of entries providing the sum of all human knowledge, i.e. the information part, and the part concerning the community of entry creators, i.e. the community, technical, organizational and service area.
In both of these areas, Wikipedia's categorization system can be, and is, applied. While the categorization of the information (knowledge) area has been extensively researched for some time, and the results have been reported in a number of sources, the second area - the community area - has not yet been researched.
The given article is an introduction to the issues of comparative research of three Wikipedias: English, Russian and Polish focused on the community parts. A conclusion concerning the folksonomy of the Polish wikipedia community section is presented, and a direction for further research is suggested.
