Abstract:

If we are to take advantage of the transformative power of IoT, we need to gaze into the future and consider the complex systems of interactions that are likely to emerge between humans and ever smarter things. Inherent in the design of all future technologies is the need for a speculative story assumed by the designers about how the future will unfold and the role that technology can play in that future world. This need for future-oriented technology-inspired storytelling has prompted this paper to investigate the use of Design Fiction as a means of facilitating collective reflection on near-future worlds and fictional prototyping of technologies within those worlds.
