Key Competencies of Managers of the Wood-based Panels Sector in Poland – Results of Empirical Research

Abstract:

The article presents the results of empirical studies conducted to identify the key competencies of managers of enterprises in the wood-based panels sector. Managerial competencies are becoming one of the key building blocks of success of the company and especially the development of their own people.

In the first stage of the research, a Delphi survey method was used to identify the key competences of managers of wood-based panel companies. This method attempts to respond to the complex nature of management and quality sciences and their dynamic development. In the second stage of the research, questionnaire surveys were conducted with a group of 89 managers employed by the seven largest companies in the wood-based panel sector.

Twenty-two competences were determined using the Delphi method on the basis of expert research. The highest number of indications was given to responsibility, logical thinking and creativity. According to the managers interviewed, the most important competencies of a manager are those that relate to the effectiveness of his or her work.

The ecological production of the wood-based panel sector actively contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This is why a multi-faceted study of the determinants of development in this sector is becoming so important. Identifying the key competences of managers enables effective management of these competences. In turn, the level of competence of managers in a given sector can have a significant impact on the level of competitiveness of companies in the sector. The research described in the article therefore provides a basis for further exploration of the topic.
