Lessons Learned from Pioneering Data Spaces and Ecosystems

Abstract:

This paper contributes to the research and practice on the use of the ecosystem perspective for the elaboration of data spaces through a synthesis of the different state-of-the-art approaches, the elucidation of the possible boundaries and interactions to think between the data ecosystem and data spaces concepts, the definition of indicators and good practices regarding the sustainability issues, the value of the data ecosystem perspective and tools to ensure this sustainability, and possible contributions on the theoretical ground through the considerations on sustainability and orchestration. For this, a multi-level perspective is adopted, based on several case studies. The results of this explorative study highlight how data ecosystems and data spaces are interdependent, especially to evaluate and foster the sustainability of the data spaces.
