The Livestock Sector in Romania. 10 years after European Union Accession- Overview. Case Study: Cattle Breeding in North – West Region – Bihor County, Romania

Abstract:

The present paper brings to the attention of the audience a relatively rarely studied subject – that of the livestock sector in Romania. The topic is of outmost importance given the important contribution of this sector to the Romanian agricultural structure. Its importance is also reflected in the share granted in the financing package and in the facilities provided to farmers through the two pillars of the CAP (Pillar 1 - Common market organizations and Pillar II – Rural Development) Thus the current paper realizes a necessary overview of the legal and financial package allotted to this sector while also providing an in-depth analysis of the situation at the regional level. The conclusion that results is that after an initial decline period this sector has regain its full potential growth and is on ascending path. What provided the added value of this research is also its particular attention provided to the data processing for the North-West Region. We can thus find relevant data and the conclusions drawn here can be applied nation-wide. We still have an extensive cattle raising system that discourages mass production and increased productivity while an important part of the consumption is still family-based. Moreover investments are required in order for the sector to achieve its full potential.
