Methods for Design Improvement of Feed System for Ultrasonically Aided Micro-Electrical Discharge Machining

Abstract:

The paper deals with constructive solutions for a feed system used at a hybrid process for miniature material removal, ultrasonically aided micro-electrical discharge machining µEDM+US. Some aspects on the state of the art of feed system for EDM are presented, e.g. types of control loops and corresponding control systems, used to improve the EDM and micro-EDM technological performances. The general and main functions are formulated, based on conceptual design approach, which were substantiated by block diagrams for displacements execution and structure of feed system. These are associated with several methods for quality improvements applied for identification of design solutions, like QFD, FMEA, relation, affinity, and tree diagrams. Finally, some constructive solutions resulted that were implemented in the design of the feed system dedicated to µEDM+US machining.
