Migration Challenges of the 21st Century: The Experience of Ukraine

Abstract:

Millions of people are forced to leave their homes and seek refuge from conflicts, violence, human rights violations, political persecution or natural disasters every year. The number of internally displaced persons continues to grow, causing for an increase in the volume of humanitarian assistance worldwide. In 2017, 65.6 million people were displaced worldwide: 22.5 million refugees, 40.3 million internally displaced persons (IDPs) as a result of conflicts, 2.8 million – seekeing asylum (UNHCR 2016).. This is the highest level of forced displacement after World War II. Up to 84% of IDPs find shelter among people who are already struggling with poverty in low- and middle-income countries (UNHCR 2016).Their survival depends on the availability of assistance provided by local communities and international organizations.
