Abstract:
Metropolises play an increasing role in the life of the global society, shaping the features of migration processes in certain regions and countries of the world. Ukraine is rapidly developing in this direction, playing a significant role in the geopolitical processes of Europe. The article is devoted to the problem of migration asymmetry of the population associated with the concentration of a significant part of the population of Ukraine in the metropolises. Metropolises and metropolitan regions are the centers of attraction for migrants, concentrating a huge industrial, labor, social, infrastructural and cultural potential. The purpose of the study is the analysis of the main features of migration processes in the metropolitan regions of Ukraine and the detection of the opportunities and threats which they have for the metropolises and the whole country. Based on foreign and native researches, the concept of “metropolis” is analyzed. It has been established that in Ukraine metropolitan functions are performed by Kiev, Kharkiv, Odesa, Dnipro, Lviv. All of them, Kiev is the exception, are monocentric metropolises of the all-Ukrainian level. Kiev is a metropolis of international importance and due to the intensive processes of suburbanization, it acquires the features of polycentricity. The factors of migration attractiveness and types of migrations that prevail in a particular metropolis are revealed. The main indicators of migration are considered: the number of arrivals, departures, the balance of migration along metropolises and regions in which they are located. The opportunities and threats of population migration for metropolitan regions are analyzed.
