Abstract:

This research seeks to investigate use of mobile (phone based) information systems (MIS) in the ReadyMade Garment (RMG) industry in Bangladesh, with a specific focus on efficiency and productivity. Telatively little is known about the use of MIS in achieving efficiency and productivity. This research fills a gap by presenting MIS as an enabler of efficiency and productivity specifically in a country where computer-based IS adoption is low. Findings from 22 interviews suggest MIS can assist in the business operation through improved communication, coordination and business processing. Owners and managers have an opportunity to work collaboratively to foster effective decision making. The findings also suggest MIS can assist in monitoring compliance and health-saftey features in turn empowering workers. The outcomes and results of this research will be of potential value to the efforts of increasing efficiency and productivity.
