Modern Science Parks: Moving from Property Management to Become Knowledge Organisations Orchestrating Regional Innovation Systems

Abstract:

As the roles of science parks (SPs) have evolved, leading to the generation of added value through knowledge for their clients, researchers have increasingly turned their attention to this phenomenon and begun to analyse it. Hansson (2007) undertook the first attempt to evaluate whether SPs (organisation) could be classified as knowledge organisations (KOs). Utilising the concept of 'ba', his assessment concluded that SPs did not exhibit all the requisite knowledge characteristics.

This article argues that SPs have evolved and now embody the essential characteristics of KOs, including the capacity for knowledge collection, processing and dissemination. Both critical analysis and desk research methods were used to provide evidence that SPs have successfully transitioned from their traditional roles as mere facilitators of physical infrastructure to becoming dynamic orchestrators of innovation ecosystems.
