Monte-Carlo Based Sprint Planning under Uncertainties

Abstract:

Experienced teams that are aware of their velocity can perform better sprint planning. Based on the knowledge gathered over the years they can precisely estimate the effort needed to successfully finish the sprint and plan the right portion of work for the sprint: not too much and not too little. Unfortunately, in today’s quick changing world the teams can also change. People are changing work places and projects and it often turns out that team experience cannot be applied to the planning process anymore. The method presented here tries to improve the sprint planning by handling uncertainty in the situation of team fluctuations: where some team members have left the team and the others have joined. The method does not have any adaptation time and can be applied to the new sprint planning just after the team has changed.
