Municipal Waste Management in Romania and EU Countries

Abstract:

One of the most actual economic and ecological problem of our modern society consist in recycling, treatment and storage of municipal waste. Thus, both nationally and internationally level, it is necessary to develop and practice an integrated waste management, based on the foundation of some strategies and action plans, for the efficient manage of municipal waste. This study aims to provide a representation on the quantity of municipal waste generated and treated in Romania and in EU countries. It also investigates the evolution of municipal waste quantities, treated by different methods (comparative approach Romania-EU countries). Results of research indicates a major interest in the treatment of municipal waste, both in Romania and in EU countries. On the other hand, analyzed countries are increasingly practicing modern methods of municipal waste treatment, such as recycling and composting. Although the gap between Romania and the European Union has narrowed over time, as a result of improving municipal waste management, it still exists.
