Narratives in organisational and management studies – contextual space, epistemological foundations and practical implications

Abstract:

For some time we have been observing a revision in methodological approaches in the context of organisation and management research. This shift or rather this process of evolution is directed on increasing acceptance and valorisation of a qualitative research. The era of modernity was considered to be the main methodological approach to research with a clear quantitative dimension. Making measurements and using the language of mathematics was as indication of a „scientific nature" of accepted research procedures. In management sciences acceptance of quantitative methods has been rooted since the beginning of their development (classical school). Qualitative research, because of its "impossibility to measure", was rather ignored. Along with the postmodern era, questioning the "universality" of quantitative approaches occurs the aforementioned change of methodology and use of qualitative tools. At the same time, it can be seen that the system of qualitative tools in the organisation studies is a subject to constant scientific reflection. That is why it seems to be important to exchange knowledge and conduct scientific debate on the development of qualitative approaches in organisational and management studies. An additional difficulty in this area is often the need for synthesis or adaptation of methods, techniques or tools developed within frameworks of other disciplines such as sociology, psychology, ethnography, anthropology and much more. The aim of this paper is to present epistemological and methodical issues concerning narrative research related to the areas of organisational and management studies. This research paper consists the presentation of theoretical issues including approaches based on social science as: constructivism, hermeneutics or phenomenology. It was assumed that the presentation of selected epistemological bases of the qualitative research procedure based on classical social sciences, would be a valuable contribution to the scientific debate. The further methodological part of this paper consists the presentation of design of a qualitative research procedure. The case study of research proceeding involved. The main purpose of the paper is a contribution to the discussion in the epistemological aspects of qualitative research in management science.
