Novel Design to Estimate Paddy Nitrogen Content

Abstract:

Nitrogen is an essential element in photosynthesis. Thus applying the correct amount of Nitrogen in paddy cultivation is a critical factor affecting both the yield and different environmental changes. Applying fertilizer, without proper knowledge of the field’s Nitrogen requirement will result in either over application or under application of Nitrogen. There are different types of Nitrogen estimation techniques in paddy cultivation namely tissue analysis, leaf color chart, SPAD chlorophyll meter and image processing techniques. Majority of these techniques have one or more drawbacks including high acquisition cost and background interference. Furthermore, the mobile device usage among Sri Lankan farmers were assessed through literature to reflect on the potential to propose a mobile device based solution. A case study was conducted to assess their literacy levels along with the ability to use simple mobile device functions. Following the design science research methodology, the authors are in the process of designing and evaluating an artifact that would gap the bridge of fertilizer information needs of farmers.
