Objectively Defined Project Complexity Baseline Projects for Improved Project Risk Management

Abstract:

This paper describes basic principles studied by the author in his research about project Complexity and the relationship with project risks. Author provides short overview how complexity is perceived on projects and depicts that universal definition of project complexity based on objective complexity factors can influence how the project risks can be dealt with. Author describes Complexity Factors that are known before project start and their connection with risks that appear on the project. The data presented are observed in 69 studied projects. Collected data presents specific risks appearing in specific Project Complexity Intervals. These connections of Project Complexity Intervals with project Risk Profiles form Risk Configurations can be used in risk prediction before the project starts and for improved management during the delivery of the project. Author is emphasizing the need of this Complexity concept to be easily applicable so that it can be used in common practice by Project managers with common (non-scientific) understanding of the topic and that the initial analysis can be done in non-lengthy time frame not threatening the preparation of the project.
