Occupational Safety and Health Improvement In A Cutting Tools Manufacturing Company

Abstract:

Safety and health level of employees is one of the most important aspects in various manufacturing sectors. A safe workplace is vital for the productivity and quality of work in any organization. This project is carried out in a cutting tools manufacturing company with the aim to improve the safety and health level at the company. The hazards which are present at the company are identified and assessed. Solutions are proposed for the major hazards identified according to the guidelines of risk control hierarchy. For data collection, the methods used are review of company records, self-observation, interview with workers and consultation with company manager. HIRARC methodology as proposed by the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) Malaysia is used for risk assessment. The two major hazards identified are flying chips at milling department and noise hazard at grinding department. For the first hazard, a machine guarding is proposed to be built. A full size prototype of the most preferred design is built and tested at the company to determine its feasibility. Meanwhile, for the second hazard, a noise enclosure is proposed to be built around the machine. A small scale prototype of the enclosure is built in order to identify the noise attenuation level of the enclosure.
