Occupational Segregation and Gender Pay Gap in Slovakia

Abstract:

The main objective of this paper is to analyze the extent of the occupational segregation and gender pay gap in the Slovak labor market over the period from 1994 to 2008. To achieve this goal, we analyzed the secondary data obtained from the annual reports on “Structure of Earnings in the SR” and online databases “Slovstat” and “DATACube” provided by the Statistical Office of the SR. The outcomes of the analysis show that structure of gender segregation in Slovakia matches the patterns described in the theoretical literature and empirical studies from other countries. They also illustrate the complexity of these patterns: e. g. the highest gender pay gap was identified in the female dominated occupation group “financial and insurance activities”. Additionally, the paper highlights, how gender differences in the labor market were affected by dynamics between the employment in private and public sector.
